Cape Town/Garden Route. Ideas for 8 day itinerary

We (2 adults) are planning to spend 2 - 3 full days based in Cape Town and would like to include Boulders Point/Cape of Good Hope, Robben Island and hopefully a botanical garden and Table Mountain in our itinerary.
What would be the best way to plan this? Hiring a car? Booking a tour locally?

About 2 weeks later we will have the opportunity to hire a car and spend 5 - 6 days touring the Garden Route (N2 one way, N62 the other way). Itinerary suggestions would be most welcome and any suggestions re mid range B and B guesthouses or hotels en route would be much appreciated..

Thanks.

I'd do it by car......it won't cost you more than a tour and its worth being able to stop where and when you want.

On the second question....lots of possibilities. What are you interested in? Also..what time of year are you going?

Having a car in the city is a hassle, so for Robben Island and Table Mountain, you can do in one day by taxi or bus. Recommend heading up the Table Mountain in the afternoon to catch sunset up there.

Boulders Point & Cape of Good Hope are best do by car. Drive south along the east coast and north along the west coast, time it so that you drive through Chapman Peaks near or at sunset depending on whether you to be there for sunset or a beach like Llandudno. If you get up early, head up first to the Lion's Head for sunrise viewing.

Compare to California and Hawaii coast, I am not impress with the Garden Route (N2 or N62). The wineland is worth a visit. The drive from there to Hermanus on R44 is more scenic than the Garden Route. You can stop in Betty's Bay for the penguin colony. And while I never visited De Hoop, I think that park is more scenic than the Garden Route too--though you will need 4x4.

If you arrive during day time, you can catch public bus from the airport to city center. Then walk or catch a taxi to your hotel/BnB.

Hi Topsywopsy,

I would suggest hiring a car. You can take one full day to do the drive around the point... start in Simon's Town, and take a leisurely drive, stopping by the penguins in Boulder Bay, Doing the Cape Point visit, driving Chapmans Peak and ending the day in Camps Bay for cocktails.

Then, the following morning, you can hike/cable car Table Mountain and book an afternoon session at Robben Island.

On the third day, have a picnic at Kirstenbosch, or, alternatively take a drive/tour to the stellenbosch/franschoek winelands.

Hope that helps,

Sarah

my advice is in part similar to above posters.

i have visited the peninsula both on a day tour (that was very nice) and by car, and would by far recommend to do it individually, with a rental car. drive down from cape town via camps bay to kalk bay. if open, chapmans peak is THE drive to do, sometimes a bit scary (and i'm from switzerland, so used to narrow roads) but with fantastic views. after that, beautiful and deserted beaches, baboons, flowers etc. , wonderful. visit the table mountain np (cape of good hope, with very nice views). drive back to cape town "on the other side" of the peninsula. kalk bay has a nice harbour and is a fantastic place to have lunch or dinner. further up is boulders beach with the penguin colony.

you can of course also do the drive the opposite way. for a sundowner, there is no better place than the leopard bar at the 12 apostle hotel south of bakoven, on the balcony with fantastic views over the ocean.

for your other destinations:
robben island - you can walk to to the robben island gateway at the v&a waterfront (or take a taxi to it). from there, obviously you will be crossing over by boat. in high season the boats are very full, so good to get there early or book ahead.

table mountain: grab a taxi to the station, or go on the "hop-on hop-off open decker bus" (a great way to get a good impression of cape town). the same goes for kirstenbosch botanical garden, you can also reach it by taxi of course and its on the blue line of the hop-on hop-off bus. within cape town (incl. table mountain, robben island and kirstenbosch) i wouldnt rent a car.
