Hiring a car (and driver)?I'm thinking about hiring a car and driver to go from Tashkent to the Ferghana Valley, and wondering if anyone else has hired a car privately within Uzbekistan.
We were thinking that, because we want to stop off and spend some time in a few places along the way before ending up in Margilan, it might be better to hire a car, giving us a bit more time, freedom and control. I've been quoted $200-250 dollars by two travel agencies, based on a one-way trip. We were thinking we'd just take a shared taxi/whatever back to Tashkent. I've no idea whether that's reasonable, or whether we'd just be better off (have to spend less) arranging it on the fly once we're actually in Tashkent.

1Hey. The $200 a $250 dollar is way to much. But we got this also proposed by a travel agency (I guess it was advantours). As for most of the long distance taxi trips, it is relatively easy to arrange by yourself. There are exceptions of course, where travel agencies or hotels propose good deals (Like Komil did for us).
In Tashkent there is a specific area just outside the city center (15 a 20 minutes by car) where all long distance taxi's for the Fergana valley are gathered. This area is a bit chaotic, especially when they see a foreigner ;). Its just along the highway and each destination has its own area.
I think you have two options if you want to go to Margilan but want to stop at other cities first. You arrange a cab to the first city you want to see and thereafter you arrange another cab for the next city. Or you arrange a cab to Margilan and try to communicate with the driver that he makes a few stops when you want (which probably cost you a bit of money extra).
For your info, it costed us $50 dollar to go to the city Fergana.
Good luck! And if you have other questions just let me know.

3Hey sorry for the very late reply. Yes, to go to the Ferghana taxi gathering point we took a "city taxi". In fact, it was just a random guy who was driving around in Tashkent (like a lot of people do) and dropped us of there for a small fee. We visited Tashkent twice during the trip so the last time we had some experience doing this. But be aware that most of the possible "taxi's" guys do speak a little bit of English (or not at all) so be prepared ;).
