Mobile Clinic East Timor

Hi

My daughter is studying medicine in the UK plans to spend her 6-week elective in Dili, East Timor this coming summer. She will be required to assist at mobile clinics accompanied by a nurse and an interpreter. I have read that both the Australian and British governments have warned about travel to the region.

My concern is that my daughter will be safe. Any insight/reassurance is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi drumgold, I think this is your second question about this issue and haven't got a response yet?

I don't know exactly the condition in Dili, but I read one of travel blog its safe in Dili and that was my friend inform me, he worked in Dili until last year. Many country have warned about travel to some region, even to Indonesia..but it's safe here.
What organization your daughter will join? in some area that safety is become a concern, usually an organization will travel in convoy.

I hope there will be a response from traveler who stay in Dili, good luck to your daughter.

I have been in Dili several times recently and have not seen anything that would worry me . I would just be sensible and remain with my group .

I travelled a fair bit there 5 years ago or so. Tensions were a bit high at the time however I found folk to be pretty friendly to foreigners, although the UN guys weren't the most popular. At that time it was advisable not to drive after dark.

Out and about around the island, I had no problems when stopping at the numerous refugee camps to buy food or water. There was a lot of bad feeling but that was directed towards other rival groups - all internal stuff which nobody tried to redirect towards me.

Young folk I spoke to were more interested in getting help to find a place to study abroad as they couldn't see any future in Timor Leste. Hopefully there's more optimism these days.

I'm sure it'll be a fine experience for your daughter, both professionally and personally.

Hi

I just left Dili yesterday and found it to be safe - the only problems I had as a woman travelling on my own was a bit of jostling in the bus station on the trip to Bercau. I find sometimes that the FCO site can be a bit over cautious with their warnings.

It's a beautiful place - people really friendly up in the mountains - wish I could have stayed longer

Thank you widiastuti, Fathomone, DerekinAsia, avalonsunset for your replies. I feel reassured. My daughter is going to finalise her trip tomorrow and she is really looking forward to the experience.
