Up-to-date info for you (as of Feb. 4, 2013):
- You fill in a one-page form (in duplicate), leave your passport and 3 photos (with a WHITE background). No flight information required; no occupation letter asked for.
- We went Monday morning at 10am. (We were the only ones there.) Picking up passports with tourist visas at Wednesday 3-4 pm (third day). So it's very fast.
- You need the following info, as well as the obvious (name, passport info, etc.): name of father, occupation, address in Myanmar (we put the name of our Yangon hotel, no street address), purpose of entry ("tourism").
From what I've read, it's quite a scene at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok. This was very simple and relaxing. Our friend also did it through a local travel agent, paying an additional $25 for the service; she was advised exactly how to fill out the application (such as not putting "photographer" as her occupation).
Myanmar Embassy hours are 9-12 and 1:30-4pm.
So if you get the chance to get your tourist visa here, do it. Note: The application process may differ from country to country. I saw very different paperwork requirements listed on other country websites for the Myanmar Embassy.

1Thanks for the info, it definitely sounds quieter than bangkok.
Though I certainly wouldn't describe my experience over the past few days at the embassy in Bangkok as much of a scene. Just some paperwork and some waiting around. You can get an agency to do it for you here as well, probably similar price wise but I'm just speculating.

2Hi, did you apply for this visa in the same month that you were due to travel to burma? Just asking as we were told that we could only get it in the same month as departure by an agent in Luang Prabang. We are heading to Vientiane soon and would like to get the visa there in order to avoid getting it in Bangkok but we are not due to catch our flight to burma until 7th march. Just wondering if you would be able to shed any light? Many thanks,
