Hawaii Advice
Hi All,I am brand new to this forum but super excited that I discovered it and hoping someone can give me some advice!
I am travelling to Hawaii with my partner in July for our honeymoon.
We are planning:
5 days on the Big Island
3 days on Maui
8 days on Oahu.
Can anyone give advice on the best areas to stay on the big island and Maui? We want to be close to populated areas so its easy to walk around, rather than hiring a car (although we are not opposed to doing this if we have to). We are also looking at doing the touristy things like a luau and a volcano tour so if anyone has any recommendations for great things to do, I would love to hear them!
Thanks in advance,
Nikki

You really need a car on Big Island and Maui, public transport is geared toward the locals to get them to and from work, etc. Try traveljigsaw.com.au, they will include all the needed insurance and only rent from the major companies.Personally in that amount of time, I would only do two islands, Big Island is really big and you will be doing a lot of driving. Have not been there in a long time but it is better to stay a few nights in Hilo or Volcano to see the sights on the East side, like volcano national park, Akaka falls, etc. and the last part of your trip on the Kohala coast which has good beaches.
On Maui, that time of year, I really like the area around Napili and maybe Kapalua.

If you dont have a rental car, then dont go to Hawaii, seriously, you need a car, though Oahu has good/decent transport, the other islands require one. Consider going to Guatemala and Costa Rica, more exotic, half the price and no car needed.5
I agree, three islands is too much for such a short trip. You really need at least two weeks for the big island so just do Oahu and Maui for a week each. Or do the whole two weeks on the Big Island. Stay a week on the Hilo side, down near Kapoho or somewhere like that. Then on the Kona or Kohala side.6
SoloHobo, this is for our honeymoon so we aren't after a cheap trip we can do anytime! Neither myself or my partner want to go to Thailand, we want to go to Hawaii and the tickets are already booked so no matter what cheap trip you suggest, it's not being changed. Thanks for your advice anyway though!Johnsang, there isnt much we want to do on the big island, apart from a volcano tour so we may still go there for a day or two and add extra time to maui. Thanks for your advice :)

You can certainly do a day trip or overnight to the Big Island to see Volcano National Park. There are companies that organize this for you (think the cost is about $300 pp) or you can book your own flight, rental car and hotel or motel if you decide to stay overnight. I'd do this from Oahu not Maui, as the flights are more frequent and not a lot of nonstops from Maui to Hilo, most go thru HNL airport. Have a wonderful honeymoon!
