I am researching how to get from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar and I came across Precision Air and Fastjet. Precision Air goes directly from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar for ~$250 USD. Fastjet, on the other hand, goes to Dar-es-Salaam for ~$25 USD (can that be right?!?!). How easy is it to get from Dar-es-Salaam airport to the ferry to Zanzibar? How long does it take and how much does it cost? Basically, I am trying to figure out if it is worth the $250 USD or not. Thanks!

Beekmajo - I think your Precision Air prices are a bit high - where do you go from Zanzibar? If you have an onward flight (to Dar or Nairobi) that should make it cheaper. I have no info about Fastjet - other than that you can not pay on_line - either M_pesa (via mobile/cell) - Tanzania phones only or cash to their offices. Bookings have to be paid within 24 hrs or they laps. Flight times should be around 80 mins for Precision - not sure what jets/aircraft Fastjet is using - but should be a bit quicker. But may not have the same number of flights that Precision has.Info on the ferry has been answered in the last 2-3 weeks - takes 30 mins to get from airport to ferry terminal - if the traffic cooperates - otherwise 45 mins. But as the last ferry departs at 4.30 PM your flight would have to arrive in Dar by 3.00 PM at the latest to be sure of catching the ferry.

Try travelstart.co.tz regarding fares from Klimanjaro to Zanzibar. I am getting fares of around 186000 TZS which approximates to around USD 115. The website says you can pay online via credit card. Even if you manage to get Fastjet tickets to Dar for $25 add to it cab from Dar airport to the city, overnight stay in the city and $35 on the ferry - the direct flight does not sound too bad. Unless you are planning to visit Dar, the direct flight looks like saving a lot of hassle with not too much difference in overall cost.3
You may want to look at Fly540. ( www.fly540.com ) We're flying from Kili to Zanzibar and the prices weren't too bad. The jet did fill up quickly so the prices may have gone up accordingly. We were the first two passengers booked on the jet since we booked about 5 months ahead of time. I don't have access to my reservation at the moment or I'd be able to give you the price.4
Fly540 website does not allow selecting Kilimanjaro although teh Destitaion Map shows Kilimanjaro as one of the stops.6
Tried it again just now but the dropdown menu still doesn't seem to have Kilimanjaro. Anyway I managed to get a booking for a reasonable price via Expedia "Nairobi-Kili-Zanzibar-Nairobi" on Precision Air.The total price of $430 seems to be cheaper than what I woul dhave gotten if I had booked the airfares separately for each sector.7
That is strange because one week ago I got the precision air flight from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar on the same day and it cost $99. What ever you do do not take the bus!! 12 hours of hell and at the end of it you feel like a milkshake!!!!8
A follow up to this. Once we arrived at Killimanjaro, it seems that FLy540 doesn't fly out of there. They may have when we originally booked (in the summer of 2012) but when were were there for the flight in February 2013 they had contracted their flights out to Precision Air from what the staff at Precision AIr told me. This created some problems as there were more people than could fit on the jet that Precision Air normally uses. Eventually they mangaged to get a bigger jet to fly in although some people were still unable to get on since it was completely full. They had to wait until the next day to try and get rebooked. So, it seems that Fly540 no longer serves Killimanjaro Airport.
