Driving a 4wd in IcelandHey!
I'll be travelling with some friends to Iceland next summer -late july-. We're planning to rent a car to visit Snaefellsnes and the southern coast, and especially a 4wd vehicle in order to visit Landmannalaugar and Þorsmörk. However, we've got no experience in fording unbridged rivers, which is rather a drawback for us. Is it complicated to reach to those places for unexperienced drivers even with a 4wd? Or would it be bettter to just get a day tour?

2A car rental company will give you a map showing you where you are contractually permitted to drive for that hire. This is a typical map for a 4wd rental from one company. The precise details will vary by hire company and by precise car hired, but I believe this is fairly typical.
As you can see, that company would not permit you to drive everywhere, and in particular not to Thorsmork.
There are plenty of exciting places you can drive if you hire a 4wd that you could not go in a hired 2wd, marked in green on that map. But clearly you do need to take care over fording rivers, just because it is a road they have permitted you to drive along, it isn't a guarantee that the fords are passable at the moment you encounter them. You do need to take personal responsibility for that.
If Thorsmork is a very special place for you to go, then you probably need to take the bus.
