The Natchez Trace runs from Vicksburg NE through the middle of MS and slashes through a corner of Alabama into TN. It is not a convenient route unless you don't mind a detour. It's pretty interesting, and you can get out and see the ruts of the old wagon route, though a little of this goes a long way. Seeing a small portion of it might be good enough for you.

The Trace runs essentially north from Natchez until Port Gibson, where it turns northeast.
The section they are driving is from (nearby) Vicksburg south to Natchez, not north to Nashville, and is a very minor detour (my map above shows about 14 extra miles).

Thank you. Was thinking of either a night in Vicksburg or Jackson and join the Natchez trace parkway in Jackson. Should be great! And looking forward to seeing Springfield too. :) cheers folks.
