Hippest areas of Tokyo for shopping, nightlife and general people watching

I'm very excited to be making my big return to Japan after 8 years away. I know how fast fashion can change in that country and was hoping some of the locals could let me know which neighborhoods in Tokyo are currently the most happening? I'm looking for neighborhoods that are trendy and where I can spot some any budding new cultural trends.

When I was there last Shibuya and Harajuku were the place to go for the young people, but I don't know if this has changed much.

Also, any recommendations for nightlife in terms of live music and/or dance clubs? I'll find the gaijin hangouts easy enough on my own, I was more interested in discovering any places that may be not as well known.

Thanks a bunch

Shibuya and Harajuku are still on for young people, no doubt. Newer and a bit more upmarket is Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka (http://japantourist.jp/photos/jiyugaoka-tokyo)

I personally like Shimokitazawa (http://japantourist.jp/view/shimokitazawa) a lot, trendy with an arty feel.

Thanks! This is exactly what I'm after. It looks like Shimokitazawa has some nightlife options too. Is that right? I'll be visiting over a weekend with my younger brother and his friend who are both Japan neophytes and want to show them an awesome time.
