1The road is fine but do not drive after dark. Avoid night driving anywhere in Haiti - it is a great way to get killed or mangled and there are not any medical services along the way to help. If you get delayed plan on staying a night in Gonaives. It gets dark early in Haiti, by the way, and there are few lights.
There can always be delays on the roads in Haiti - an accident, wash-out, whatever, but the average time is about 7 hours.

3Roads are the most dangerous places in Haiti - a quick look at all the wrecked cars after the weekend is proof enough of that. You can have the best car in Haiti and some drunk in a patched-together brakeless rustbucket (which is most of them) can still hit you head on and kill you.
I also would not want to assume liability for any car accidents in Haiti. It is the sort of place that a clumsy kid falling into the side of your car will result in a mob forming and you getting beat up or worse. If you do rent a car (which I do not advise), also get a driver - not only will they know the proper routes, but you at least have some kind of buffer against potential legal and extra-legal drama.

4I would advise against traveling via self-driven auto in Haiti and certainly not alone. I definitely would hire a driver if you insist on this form of travel. There are a host of things that could go wrong and you would not want to get caught out there stranded etc. on a rural stretch of road. Furthermore, only a person who drives these routes regularly would know if portions of the roads were closed and any alternate routes. Lastly, Haiti (and other countries as well) have their own distinct way of driving. TRUST me it's hair-raising as a passenger and I'm sure treacherous as a foreign driver; not to mention ANYYYYYY damage to the rental even the most obscure could rack up unexpected fees.
