Camping in UAE & Oman is easy, I made a detailed post about the trip i did last year, but its been lost to the archives due to TTs reshuffling program. Basically, you can camp anywhere you like that's not going to often local people, eg on a military base or in someone's front garden, its very safe and popular too, given hotel prices there. A 4wd vehicle will help enormously got getting to the best, most secluded spots.
Just drive around until you find a place that looks nice, and set up! I just bought a cheap mat and with my sleeping bag slept under the stars. I didn't stay in the places you're going to, but should be easy enough, there's always lots of space. Certain beaches have toilet blocks, otherwise you can use petrol station toilets or even hotels, they usually don't mind. Another tip is if you need to charge stuff, drop by a internet cafe for a couple of hours, or linger in a restaurant,

I'm camped on the beach in Fujairah a few times and really enjoyed it. Usually I sleep out under the stars but at this time of year you may find yourself on a busy beach as in the cooler months local families are on the beach till very late in the evening (at least at weekends, probably quieter during the working week). I prefer to have a tent if there are tons of people around.

As almondy says, it's easy to wild camp and both countries are very safe.

If you have the time, go to Liwa. It's gorgeous, but you need at least on other are if you want to venture out in the dunes.
Note that most rental companies will NOT allow their 4x4's to go offroad, so don't mention this when you rent a car.

I think most do allow them to go off-road, tha'ts the whole point of hiring one and why they cost over $100 a day. They don't allow 2wd vehicles to go off-road.

I agree with Henkbos - the vast majority of rental companies in UAE and Oman do not cover vehicles for driving off-road. This applies regardless of whether you are renting a saloon car or a 4x4.

The reason 4x4s cost over $100 per day is because (regardless of whether they're insured or not) they do get taken off-road, and they get hammered in the process. The majority of the damage incurred is not the kind of collision damage that can be claimed back on insurance, its the clutches, and gear boxes and brakes that get trashed, so the rental companies charge rates that include the kind of wear and tear that the vehicles get put through. But they dont insure their cars for off-road usage.

Wow. This really sounds so exciting. I wish I were not in the other distant part of the world then I would have definitely planned something with you guys! Though let me tell you, I am planning to have a blast in Australia. :)

I am living in Dibba, Fujairah. It is nice place to do camping, dhow cruise, fishing etc. Beaches in Dibba & Khorfakkan are clean & best in UAE. There is wadis, historical places, local markets, museums, forts etc here in UAE East Coast. If you are visiting this part and need any help please let me know.
