shuttle from guatemala city to antigua

Our airplane arrives at 8pm in Guatemala city. Can we still get a cheap shuttle to Antigua? Or how much will a taxi cost? Can we take any taxi? Or should we stay in Guatemala city and take a chicken bus the following day?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Taxi to Antigua 200Q, $25. Safe, secure, at that time of night 45 minutes +/- direct to your hotel.
I have used them a number of times from GC to Antigua direct to my house in Antigua.

get out of Guatemala City, Antigua is 1000 times nicer to enjoy than GC. The shuttles from the airport are right as you exit Baggage Claim, and they are $10PP and take 45 minutes, door to door to will drop you at your hotel, and they usually know good hostels/GH just tell em your price range. A taxi is usually $30 ish.

I will take a nice spanish colonial UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobblestone streets, beautiful Casas, hotels, and churches, cafes, bars, nightlife, peace and quiet. Zone 1 is fine if you are stuck in GC, but if you thinks its nicer and more enjoyable for a night out, go for it, each to their own..you would be the minority.

It sounds like the taxi is the way to go if the shuttle is not running at 9pm. Can I take any taxi company?

Here's my take, reposted from a previous thread:
You can just walk out of the airport and choose someone who has "Antigua" on a sign; the cost will be $10 per person. You may have to wait a few minutes for the van to fill and a few minutes on the other end if others are dropped at their hotels/destinations in Antigua before you are.

You can hire a taxi on the spot; cost might be $25-35, depending on your negotiating skills (shared, not per person). When I'm arriving at night I have my hotel - http://www.casa-cristina.com - arrange a shuttle for me, $35 for up to 3; many hotels will make arrangements for you. After a long trip it's kind of nice to exit the airport and see my name on a sign.

Here are 2 agencies I've used for transportation in Guatemala:
http//:www.adrenalinatours.com
http//:www.rainbowtravelcenter.com

All forms of transit from the airport should accept USD. If you decide you'd rather sleep near the airport and head to Antigua in the morning, here are 2 recommended places that offer free airport shuttles and breakfast in the morning; the 1st is budget, the 2nd midrange, both great value:

The taxi's at the airport will be the "white taxi's" safe and secure and again, I have never paid more than $20 from the airport to Antigua.

Guatemala city has a lot to offer...much more than Antigua unless you're going for language school and/or want to see more westerners. Having said that Guatemala city is not a long term destination but it's full of history. Don't cheat yourself.
Taxi between the 2 is cheap and easy. But then again the chicken buses are full of opportunity to mix in and learn....why else are you traveling?

Dont know how many in your group but I agree with Hopefulist it so nice to be met by someone with your name on a sign and just follow them while they help with you luggage.

Here's a heads up for you:
I was getting off a plane in Guatemala City not long ago. Walking out of the terminal building I was offered a taxi ride to Antga for only US$100.00.
Be careful.

but the problem is if you didn't know any better. i have some real personal opinions about people in guatemala who deal with tourists, they have no conscience when it comes to money. i refer to as impuesto blanco.
