CANADA - UK driving licence.. and Work
I can't see this info on the site, apologies if already addressed.1) Am I right in thinking that my UK drivers licence is valid in Canada. I will take both parts.
2) I assume that when I find a job in Canada they'll want something like a Canadian Tax code & Canadian Bank account. Am I forgetting anything? On the Canada Revenue agency website, I cant see how I would apply for a tax number. Do you get allotted one automatically when you start working?
Cheers
Tom

1) I think technically you should be applying for an Ontario license after 6 months but I had a French friend look into it (he was in Canada for a year) and never really got a clear answer...he just kept his French license and was fine. You'll just be renting? It might be different if you are planning on buying a car.2) You'll have to get a Social Insurance Number. I guess that's what we would call a "tax number." Check out this web site.

You can use a valid driver’s licence from your own province, state or country.
Visiting for 3 months+
If your licence is from another country, you need an International Driver’s Permit from your home country.
Once you become an Ontario resident, you have 60 days to switch to an Ontario driver’s licence."

...thats if you are renting a car. To get auto insurance on a car that you buy you will need an Ontario license...7
your ontario license will be valid in teh rest of canada for driving or renting, but if your plans change and you reside elsewhere, you'll need to swap.going the other way, my swap in the UK was easy, but i wasn't allowed to keep my canadian license. not even as a souvenir.
come to think, before that i was in montreal for nearly 2 yrs with a NB license, and car rental wasn't an issue. but that was a few years ago, and they may have tightened up.
