Travel to Maymar's Deep South / Myeik Archipelago

Any information on travel to the Myeik Archipelago and other places of interest in Myanmar's deep south would be much appreciated. I was in Burma a few weeks ago, so know what to expect.

I'm particularly interested in places to stay, restrictions for independent travel, price and availability of flights from Yangon, getting about by boat while there, etc. I'll probably have less than 10 days in Burma this time.

Thanks in advance.

I visited the area Jan 2012; by plane from Yangon to Myeik. Plan was to take the daiily boat to Dawei and from there flight back to Yangon. Leaving Yangon I had the tickets for the flights and the boat. At that time there were several flights a day to Myeik and back from Dawei to Yangon. Among them Air KBZ, but also Air Mandalay and Air Yangon.
Myeik: colourful city though as a tourist I was restricted to city boundaries. Two small islands in view of the city are accessible though. Hotel: Mya See Seim was my choice. Far overrated in those days I thought: I paid $ 45 for a room 'seaview', with aircon (it was hot!) but no hot water. Restaurant: on the boulevard in the northern part of town a few nice restaurants on the boulevard, Seaview indeed! Name of my pick: Shwe Yar Su Rest.
I had to change my boatticket to a flightticket as the boat did not run for several days; sea too rough.
Dawei: as a city I thought it less attractive. They do not make use yet of their location at the sea/riverside. But one can travel around more freely. Went by motortaxi to Maungmagan-beach, saw part of the beach where there were a few Burmese tourists. Plenty of places to eat, even think one could stay overnight. I stayed at Pal'e Eikari, bungalowstyle of hotel, with a very nice and also rather good gardenrestaurant. I was told that there is a beach, fishing village south of Dawei, much prettier: San Lang, but also harder to get at. K 20.000 for a day by taxi, bad raod, a 1 hour drive.

Lovetotravel, many thanks for all the info. I'm hoping that restrictions have eased somewhat since Jan 2012.

Hi,

We recently travelled overland to Myeik. Here is our experience and here you can find practical info such as accomodation and transport plus costs.

Thanks!
