A "round the world ticket" is rarely a good deal, in my opinion. But I guess if you have no clue how to book cheap tickets on your own, they might be. If that's the case, I would advice contacting a travel agent for help. Here are two just to give you an idea of prices and routes:

I dunno, Max. Aroundtheworldtickets now has a New York-Hong Kong-Bangkok-India-Europe-New York
itinerary for $1599.

It really depends how long you have to travel, and how many continents and regions within those, that you plan to visit. But getting between South Africa, South America, SE Asia, Polynesian/Pacific Islands, as well as Eastern Europe, Asia, and the MIddle East, takes some major planning, seasonal weather issues, and also seasonal influxes that inflate air fares, like Chinese New Year, Holy Days, School vacations etc. The other issue is Visa's, many may be expensive, require onward travel from a country, so no oneway entries, and also duration of stay, in addition to restrictions foreigners crossing borders, like Tibet, Burma, Panama/Colombia etc etc...

Well, the actual wording is "From $1599 plus tax". Once you actually contact them and have them plug in your dates, I expect the price to go up considerably. If all they do is book flights for you, you can most likely do better booking them yourself since they need a way to make money off of you (the exception would be if they have brokered deals with the airlines or other agents). Again, if you are not experienced with booking flights and know how to use layovers to your advantage, using one of these sites is probably still your best bet.

As for pre-booked RTW tickets with an alliance, it is possible for you to construct it in such a way that you will "save" money, e.g. by picking the most expensive one-way segments there are, but in practice, booking segment-by-segment using low-cost airlines or whatever airline is cheapest and taking advantage of layovers seems to always end up a cheaper option.

OK. So I plugged in my dates for the NY/Asis/India/Europe/ NY itinerary leaving in a couple months. We'll see what price they come up with. Then we'll see if you can beat that price---

Check out Star Alliance RWT which includes United Airlines, Thai Air, Singapore Air, and LAN Air -- I have heard good things about them. LAN flies throughout South America and has routes to Europe and San Francisco. Singapore Air flies between Shanghai and Macao/Hong Kong plus other Southeast Asian routes. Thai Air flies to Nepal, Bangkok, India. I don't know if Virgin is included, because they do fly between Europe and Africa, plus across the Atlantic tthrough the USA.

Taca is also a partner with United, for Central America, and Luthansa/Swiss Air, which go everywhere in that hemisphere.

Taca also flies in Ecuador/Galapagos Islands and in Peru/Cuzco to see Machu Picchu. I flew United/Continental to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and United/(a Panamanian airline) from Houston to Panama City and to Quito, Ecuador.

If you go with an alliance, Star Alliance typically has the most useful partners. One World would be second best. But it really depends on what continents you choose.
