1Just spent 5 weeks over there had a wonderful time: people are warm and friendly - place is clean and tidy - roads are paved - BUT watch the driving: Negombo accomodates bit of both - Lewis Place the main strip is cut into two - top end family accom/hotels/guest houses - i am sure if you search around you will find accom suitable to your taste - in whole Negombo is very family oriented - vist La Dolce Vita on a Friday nite - great live band who plays all kinds of music from regga to rock but you must book - top end is quite peaceful because of family accom, everything closes at 2300hrs - trains service from Negombo to Colombo via airport every half hour this service ( forgot the name of airport stop but then you would have to catch a tut tut) last train is 1930hrs both directions - i am looking to return in May - safe journey Peace
PS -: i know of a family who rent a room on the main strip at a reasonable price 15$ pd in a very quite street

4There are both types of accomodation there. The beach is covered in garbage at the end near town - I found a dead animal on the beach within 100m of my guesthouse. The ocean is very silty and grey, not inviting for swimming. The town is interesting to walk around, don't miss the fish market. The train schedule is published on a board at the train station and I wouldn't trust anything else.
It is the closest accomodation area to the airport and that is why it survives. Don't expect your accomodation to be clean or nice if you are at the budget end of things. Quite the opposite.

5Some lovely HomeStays to choose from though if your Budget allows?
I can highly recommend this place in Negombo for a night or 2 - http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/sri-lanka/hotels/ayubowan.html
Very quiet, wonderful hosts and great to sit outside round the pool and relax. Extremely clean as well!!!

6There are backpacker type places ( I stayed at the Beach villa guesthouse) and some posher hotels for packages tourists, couples etc but I would say it's nothing like Dahab as the beach is very dirty and there aren't many restaurants or shops. The town is funto spend a few hours exploring but its really just good for one night. Don't plan on staying longer as it's rather lacking in charm or nightlife.
