Backpacking in West Africa. Any advice?

I'm currently planning a route in West Africa for this summer. Has anyone traveled West Africa before? Any advice, comments?

Thank you

Advice: Tell us where you're going in the sub-region

Comment: If you tell us, we may be able to assist!

No, nobody has. Ever. You'll be the first one.

Has anyone been to planet earth?
Any comments on that one? Please be specific.

Thank you (in advance - I will not say thanks later)

Why is everyone being so unhelpful. Yes the poster should have been a bit more specific so explain that then see if you can give them the benefit of your knowledge. To the poster I'd say make sure you Don't miss out on Ghana it's amazing. Great people, culture and nightlife

The females. The most colourful cloth of Africa. Amazing. Ghana, Togo etc. the most friendly people of Africa.

Pablo Picasso got his inspiration from Chavin de Huantar. Andy Warhol should have gotten his inspiration about colours from the cloth of the females. And Keith Haring.

Hi Mark,
My friend and I backpacked through west Africa last summer. We flew into Nigeria and then travelled overland to Ghana, also spending time in Benin. We were meant to fly from Ghana to Gambia and then get ferry up to Senegal, however flight got cancelled (don't book ANYTHING with Bravofly) so got a flight to Senegal and spent some time there/
Really enjoyed the quaintness of Benin such an underrated place, absolutely adored Ghana and Senegal. Though found Senegal a little pricey but there is so much to see and do there!
Hope that wets your appetite let me know if you need anymore info!

To be fair, I did say 'planning' a route, therefore you were made aware that I had little experience/knowledge of the region, hint, why my question was so open.

Also, WEST AFRICA has, what, 17 countries?.. It's not like I said, "I'm planning a trip to AFRICA, has anyone ever been?".

WanderingJohn and Elizabth_2102 - thank you for your replies, I will get back to you.
Best wishes

Dude, you didn't indicate

  • for how long you wanna travel
  • what your budget is
  • what are your main interests

etc. etc.

Without that, it is hard to give ANY advice. Do your homework and come back with more specific questions, or at the very least, give us a little more info/details to work with.

The OP obviously hasn't done a search or he would have found a lot of info from a lot of posters including myself with a lot experience & ideas (despite the cull of posts by LP)

Marc_Foo has hit the nail on the head

But after that little rant by the OP, I'm not sure I really want to help out at all

How do such grumpy people manage in Africa where often things Don't go to plan. Yes MacKinnon if there's anything you need to know particularly regarding Ghana let me know. As I said it's a while since I was there but I still have contacts there.

Hi, did you solidify a route yet? I am also planning a route through West Africa, and planning to leave in Autumn 2014. The route I am planning involves following the coast somewhere between Senegal and Gabon. The main countries I am interested in are Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Nigeria, Gabon. I would be very interested to hear what route you finally decided on.
