Which part of Delhi is better to stay in: Connaught Place or Karol Bagh?

As in the thread. I can either stay at the YMCA at Connaught or a hotel in Karol Bagh. Those who have the experience, which area do you think is better? I am only staying for 2 nights. Thanks

Karol Bagh's more interesting in my opinion ... Connaught is kind of soulless.

I like Pharhagange that is popular with tourist. You will find cheap hostels that are good.
Connaught maybe not but to visit. Connaught is a 3mins walk from phargange anyway.

I am not sure how much actual experience #2 has had at staying in a flop in Delhi.
I would always advise PaharGanj as a first stop for backpackers, as it is extremely popular and cheap as well as a great place to meet up with others but even a World sprint champion couldn't get from CP to PaharGanj in 3 minutes.

Agree with no. 1. Have stayed in Karol Bagh on two different visits to India. Connaught expensive for what you get. Karol Bagh has great food choices, cheap hotels, easy access to airport and two of the main train stations. Prices we paid around 1200 rupees in 2009. It's a good place to stay, imho. Good luck.

I vote ConnaughtPlace for Westerners. It is cleaner and more comfortabalre though more expensive. Assuming you can walk to the Metro (which is true of most of ConnaughtPlace) then this is the place to be.

For example:

Hotel Arpit Palace lies on a square in walking distance from the Metro Station Karol Bagh.
Behind this hotel is a big shopping area.
Hotel Metropolis (renovated 2 years ago) is in walking distance from the Metro station RK Ashram Marg in Paharganj.

Both hotels have a rooftop terrace and a bar / restaurant.

We've stayed in metropolis a couplatimes and liked it but note there are 2, same private owners, near each other - the so-called guest house has excellent rooms but no restaurant/bar.

Take it from a local, stay at Connaught Place. It saves you a lot of travel trouble.

Karol Bagh ain't too far but it puts you at the centre of a crowded local market on a westbound metro line. Its a rather drab urban setting as well. It is NOT close to the Railway Stations in the least.

CP, by contrast is the main metro hub, has direct access to the airport metro express, is walking distance from Paharganj and the New Delhi Railway station and is as central as it gets. Security is at its best in this part of town, and its easy to find transport to anywhere. Plus you've got a lot of decent eating and great shopping.

#9 There is a concept almost unique to this Indian Forum that the local knows what is best for the travelling foreigner. This is frequently a misconception as the local does not face the same difficulties and normally hasn't actually experienced it, particularly low budget options.
So perhaps it is a little counter-productive to say "take it from a local" as you almost certainly are not writing from personal experience.

#9 writes good valid points for staying at Connaught.

However, if being on a budget is an issue then stay in the Pahar Ganj (as I do).

Karol Bagh is the middle of the middle and therefore nowhere.

#10, I agree, but I was simply referring to the criteria I look at while I travel. Plus I often wish I lived in Connaught Place so I wouldn't have to bother with traffic ordeals on a daily basis. So its a different kind of personal experience. Cheers!

Well, I ended up staying in Paharganj and think it was a great choice. Thanks, everybody for your input.
