Alternatives to San Juan del Sur?Hi all...
I'm a solo traveller, late 30's. I'm looking for a beach town that's NOT San Juan del Sur. I like meeting other backpackers, socializing, a BIT of partying, but after seeing what goes on in places like Bocas del Toros in Panama, I don't wish to recreate that during a trip to Nicaragua. San Juan del Sur seems like it's that kind of vibe - which is a bit much for me.
Is there a beach town that appeals to quieter, more mature travellers can socialize, even have a few drinks, but avoid the early-20's party-all-the-time attitude? I certainly don't want to be isolated, or around only couples.
Doesn't seem like there are a lot of options! Any advice?

8Of course, if someone can tell me that San Juan del Sur is a lot of fun and not as absurd as I am picturing it, that could work too.... :-)

10We liked Jiquilillo (go from Leon to Chinandega and on to Jiquilillo). We stayed at Rancho Tranquilo. There are not many bars or restaurants around so you eat at Rancho Tranquilo. They have a bar and in the evening everyone hangs out there. There were all ages when we were there and not only couples. The beach is great, swimming is fun, surfing is good. Long beach walks possible. Kayak excursions into the wetlands as well.

11Hmmm, so does this mean that San Juan del Sur is over the top absurd?? I'm planning a trip with some friends in May and was thinking of renting a house here. Not looking for the spring break-like crowd, rather a beach town with enough to do that people won't get bored, but not the plastic environment you find at big beach resort towns, nor the drink yourself into a stupor crowd. Suggestions?

12I stayed in San Juan Del Sur for a little while. It's definitely a bit less rowdy in general than either Puerto Viejo or Bocas Del Toro, but you can find crazy parties if you want.
If you want something less wild in Nicaragua, try the beach near Leon (I forget what it's called). Or even quieter -- Ometepe or Laguna De Apoyo (Depending on how comfortable you are with swimming in Lake Nicaragua).
