Trnsportation from Oaxaca to Yanhuitlan, and back, in one day
Can anyone provide detailed information for taking a van from Oaxaca to Nochistlan, and from Nochistlan to Yanhuitlan? Street addresses and times would be most helpful. I don't know how early I'd have to leave Oaxaca to do a round trip. Thanks so much!1
As at the tourist office in front of the cathedral in Oaxaca; they have names and addresses of all the transportation companies. Or read the classified section of the daily Oaxaca newspapers, they list the transport companies and usually their schedule there. And consider taking a SUR bus from their periferico sur station, I believe they still serve those towns.2
I want to suggest a novel I really enjoyed reading, set in Oaxaca and Nochixtlan, that is, "Almost Never" by Daniel Sada (Graywolf: Minneapolis, 2012), which won the Herralde Prize for Fiction; the author also won Mexico's National Arts and Science Prize in 2011, just before his death.3
I don't remember a toursit office in front of the Cathedral. The one that used to be in the Oaxaca Painters Museum moved and there appears to only be a tourist kiosk. What am I missing? I've stpooed in another on Matamoros but I'll also check the one opposite El Llano. Also, I'll definitely look for the book you recommend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!4
I was thinking of the kiosk in front of the cathedral. It is a municipal tourist office, so they have addresses in Oaxaca of transport companies. The office in the Painters of Oaxaca museum across the street (which I had forgotten about, even though I visited them recently) is, or was, a branch of the state tourist office, like the one beside the Teatro Juarez opposite Llano Parque, so they'll have more info about destinations outside Oaxaca city, and they have English speakers.5
About four years ago we bought a ticket a day in advance and took a bus from the first class terminal in OAX. Just short of a couple of hours to Nochixtlan. There we negotiated a cab fare of about $12.00 U.S. an hour and went to Coixlahuaca first (well worth it) back to Nochixtlan then to Yanhuitlan only about 15 minutes away. Check with tourist office. These sites are closed one day a week. Maybe Monday, but check. Also in Coixlahuaca the ex- convento was not open. We walked around town, and found a guy with a key. He gave us a great private tour for a tip. Checking out Nochixtlan was interesting as well. This all went faster than we thought and we were ready to leave before our return bus trip. We got a partial refund at the Nochixtlan bus station and went back on a second class bus to a terminal near the OAX second class terminal which was fine. This was a nice day trip and really worth it. Eight hours is plenty, you could go to Yanhuitlan in less.
