fruit, berry, nut, seed, spice??

i'm trying to figure out what i took a picture of in a food market in Hanoi, Vietnam. It was dark red, the size was a bit bigger than a cherry, it had a tough exterior with wide ripples and a pinched top. not sure if it was a fruit, nut, berry or seed. it looked like you could peal a shell or peal back. and a basket was full of them. i can't seem to figure it out with a google search.
thanks for your suggestions!

Mangosteens are brown and a lot bigger than cherries
Doesnt sound like a rambutan. Id say it is a lychee (a fruit)

If you could attach the picture here, it would help... It could be a nutmag or lychee etc.

Speaking of mangosteens - what months are they in season in SEA?

They are my favourite fruit but ridiculously expensive here in Vancouver.
