digital storage?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what digital storage people were using whilst in south America. I am flying off in April and will be planning to use a lot of gb's. my first thought was online storage (cloud) etc, but I fear the upload speeds might mean I would be sat by a computer all night uploading photos. what do most travellers do? I was going to take a hard drive but I wanted to send photos home but buying usb pens etc seems such a hassle.

comments all welcome,

thanks.

Hello,

I use a colourspace UDMA device. It's purely a backup device for memory cards. It doesn't do anything else like a laptop, but it's small, quick and designed for the purpose of backing up after a shoot or when travelling. I have the 500gb but you get up to 1tb I think. It will load a card up in 16mb per second, so an 8gb card is done in minutes.

Not cheap at 250-300 pounds for something so specific, but my photos are precious to me and so is space in my bag, so it worked well for my needs. Google it.

I keep my memory cards in a separate bag to this device so I have 2 copies when I'm away in different locations on my person.

Ta.

Nb. I use a colourspace2. It got released a few months back and is quicker than the older one. I got mine on eBay from someone who seemed the only person/trader to have them in the uk.

Hello
If you already have a netbook or small laptop take it with you.
There's wifi everywhere but the speed might sometimes be to slow for uploading several GB.
Maybe you can use the PCs in the internetcafes to copy to USB flashdrives, but I never tried.

You can leave your memory card with your pics to local photo service. That's what I've always done.
I used to have my pics copied to cd's but that was years ago. Anyway, today I'd go with USB flash drive, and use local photo shop. It's relatively cheap and the small device takes little space.
