Zihuatenejo to Puerto Escondido

My boyfriend and I are backpacking the pacific coast by bus and staying in hostels or cheap hotels. We will be in Zihuatenejo for about a week then plan to head south to Puerto Escondido. It seems like a long bust trip, so we would like to break it up and stay some place along the way. The easiest I think would be Acapulco? But we aren't thrilled about that destination. Does anyone know of a cool, place to stop on the way for a night or 2 that is less touristy and smaller than Acapulco? But still easy to access by bus? Has anyone been to Pie De La Cuesta? Even someplace farther than Acapulco would be good, like halfway to split the journey...
Any help appreciated!!!
Thanks!

Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca is easy to access by bus, and less touristy, but no cooler since it's nearly at sea level too.

If you want someplace more interesting, try Parque Nacional Lagunas de Chacahua, closer to Puerto Escondido, but less easy to access.

If you're looking for a stopover of a day or two or three, the zocalo area of Old Acapulco would be quite fine. There are several really cheap, basic but adequate hotels like the California near the zocalo. The bus system is a bit crazy but will get you to anywhere you want to go in the geographic area.

Pie de la Cuesta is a bit isolated and definitely boring. The most energetic thing around is the enormous pounding breakers.

If traveling by long distance bus then your only stop-off point will be Acapulco. Although "touristy" you will find way fewer foreigners there than either Puerto Escondido or Zihuatenejo and there are accommodations for all budgets. Backtracking to Pie de la Cuesta will add on time.

An alternative is Playa Ventura but that will involve second class bus travel and is not convenient to get to.

Playa Ventura. Hands down. Playa Ventura. Easy to get to. Easy.

Marquelia could be a good option. You can see in the map that it's located exactly halfway between Zihuatanejo and Puerto Escondido, although I think you need to catch a bus in Acapulco anyway. While in Zihuatanejo, I recommend staying in Bahia del Potosi, you'd find better located hotels (nearer to the beach) for better prices. I've just been there a couple of weeks ago, and the beach was fantastic. Huge and unspoiled. We even had the chance to see dolphins, whales and enormous sardine shoals right in the beach. On the other hand, the road portion between Zihuatanejo and Acapulco should be taken only during the day. Good Luck

There have been no incidents on the Zihua/Acapulco bus run in several years . Perfectly safe night or day,
Also while I love Barra de Potosi it is rather isolated for backpackers. Lots of decent low cost spots in Zihuatanejo on or near the beach. Hotels,Inns & Hostels. Send me a E-mail & I will give you some leads including a lovely 2 room bungalow with Cable, WiFi, A/C & kitchenette in a very secure location for $16 US a night. But 5 minute stroll to the beach.
PS My wife & I are taking a overnight bus tomorrow Irapuato to Zihuatanejo a 7 1/2 hour trip arriving 8:00 AM.

" There have been no incidents on the Zihua/Acapulco bus run in several years " Well, that's not true as the incident described here Crime News was discussed on here at some length. And here's yet another from last year Costa Line

I agree with #7. Not true - that there have been no incidents). Daylight travel, only.

Sorry I missed your request. We actually were traveling via Autobus through the "lawless" states of Michoacan & Guerrero from Midnight to 7:AM on the first. Sleeped most of the way on this completely incident free night time journey.
