If you are arriving via a land border then you'll have to find a consulate somewhere beforehand and that's not so easy, as there are not many of them. Usually you can get the visa on the sport, or by the next day. No LOI required, but expect to pay a lot.

If you are arriving in Dushanbe by air, you can get a visa at the airport. Probably. However, you may have to convince the airline taking you to Dushanbe that this will (probably) be OK so that it lets you board the flight.

I'm trying to find out the same info about visa for EU citizen arriving to the Dushanbe airport. Basically you can get the visa there, but a letter of invitation is either compulsory or recommended (please travelers, correct if I'm wrong!). Do you know Tajik travel agencies that can arrange visas for independent travelers? Or can any Tajik citizen be the invitor?
