Teaching in VN

Im looking for information on teaching in Viet Nam or Thailand.
Im wondering which is the best place to teach and which course is best for training in terms of recognition.
Ive heard Hanoi is a good place to train and easy to get good work but any advice would be well appreciated.

You want to do a teaching certificate or you want a job as a teacher.

Its my daughter.
She wants to teach in VN.
She has a degree but not in teaching so would have to do a qualification course in order to do this.
She may try to do this before going but is keen to know the best course in terms of what they require there.
When I was in Thailand last,I met people who were going to Hanoi to do their qualification course as it was the cheapest place to do this--but i didnt get details. So thats a possible option also?
hence the twofold question.

Well with a degree, she wont have a problem finding work, VN government loves degrees. She can do a course here either a Celta,Tefl or Tesol which costs about 1500 usd. But at the end of the day it comes down to classroom experience, once she has that then she can find a job no problem.

With a degree she should be OK if she does a Tefl or Tesol online . Online courses usually cost about USD250. rk is right about experience. Experienced teachers take the cream of work.

Most schools hate online teacher training as you dont get any classroom exposure, the online one is cheap, but carrys no weight when looking for work

If she went there to do the course, with her degree,do you think she could do on site training for anything less than the $1500US and be accepted to a decent school for teaching?
Are you guys are there teaching now? Your advice is invaluable-thanx

Also curious about whether the norm is a contract and if so how long -1 yr?

If you want her to gain a decent certificate you will need to pay 1500usd, I know as I have done one.Dont sign a contract with a school, they are not worth doing. Just get her to do a decent course and then while doing it have a look around for a job.

It depends where you get a job and how many hours, you generally make enough to live here very comfortably. If she had a degree for teaching she could earn a great salary. She can get a job all over Vietnam at a range of 10-20 usd an hour, usually tax free.

The in house month's training can be difficult. I met an expat who was very good with languages, and who in actual fact had another language degree, try the month's course. He gave up after two weeks mainly due to the arrogant, pedantic and bombastic attitude of the teachers.

I have just been accepted onto the 4-week intensive CELTA teacher training in Hanoi, so I may have more information to impart later on the merits of Vietnam for this and further teaching opportunities. However, I would say, that I felt it important to do some training before teaching - the certificate will be a significant achievement in itself (if I make it!) and will help me develop skills (and get started) as a teacher. I think if your daughter is considering taking a certificate as a way in then she shouldn't necessarily be swayed away from that.

Just make sure that the Celta is recognised, there are only about 2 places in Hanoi that offer international Celta.
