Quick trip to Auckland in July

Hi. I have a quick stop over in New Zealand for 2-3 days in mid-July. I can either fly into Wellington and somehow make my way up to Auckland or just fly in and out of Auckland. I have never been to New Zealand and realize that this is an insanely short trip but figure I might as well see a tiny part of the country while I am stopping through. Any suggestions about must sees when there in winter that are close and easily accessible from Auckland or if you think that driving from Wellington to Auckland would be best. Thanks!

There is a train from Wellington to Auckland, if it goes on the right day for you.

Driving at that time of the year with your limited time could be risky if it snows enough to get road closures.

The trip from Auckland to Wellington is a really long one by road! Your time would be eaten up quite considerably with travel time.

8hrs if done in one stint so 2-3 days would break it up nicely. Biggest problem is Desert Rd.

Risk of road closures might mean a change of route, but hardly a problem - you will just see different country. Via Sh 3,4, or 5 are alternatives, all interesting routes. But the train is really nice too.

Recommend you base yourself in Auckland. You can get a really good snapshot of New Zealand, but you'll need a car - waiheke island and vineyards, hiking in the Waitakeres, vineyards in Matakana region, deserted beaches (albeit wild and windy if the weather isn't cooperating), hike the Rangitoto volcano, 3 hours by road to Rotorua for cultural activities, white water rafting and bubbling mud pools

Forget Wellington. It'll be freezing and the wind will blow the milk from your cup of tea. Take a short excursion up the east coast instead.
