Where to Buy Viazul Bus Ticket in Habana?

A simple one for the experts.

Having decided that I will not be cycling out of the city, I need to catch a bus (with bike) to Australia and will start pedalling from there.

I arrive in Habana on Mon eve and want to leave on the bus to Australia on Thurs morning. Normally (ie other countries) I would go to the bus station and get a tcket, but I have read that you can't buy tickets there until departure time. Is this true? If so where can I buy a ticket?

I will be staying in the Vedado area.

Australia??? I did exactly what you are used to do when I was in La Habana, I went to the bus station and bought tickets two days in advance (to Santa Clara) without problem.

The Havana Viazul station is in Vedado, on 26th Ave. right across the street from the zoo. You can buy tickets in advance, thus having a reservation unless it is only a few days before you leave. Then, you can buy a ticket just before departure if they have an open seat on the bus.

You can also buy Viazul tickets and board at the Omnibus terminal by the Plaza de Revolution.

I'm not sure what the issue really is.

To ride to Australia, ride to Batabamo... ride to the end of the pier.... and keep pedaling. Seems pretty simple and you don't even need a bus ticket.

Simon: you will have a great adventure and enough memories and stories to last for a long time. I am sure when you return you will be happy that you went and recommend others do the same. But I bet you probably will not want to do it again.

The on-line booking facility is also working again for Viazul.

And I have been able to pay for Viazul tickets on line with an American credit card. They seem to be processed by someone in Spain.

Yes Bob yet another anomaly - YOU can buy Viazul but not Cubana with a US credit card.

Today is Sunday, tomorrow is Monday when I arrive and I want to catch a bus on Thurs. On line tickets have to be bought 6 days in advance, otherwise I would have done this.

I am afraid I still don't understand. Bob wrote (No2) "You can buy tickets in advance, thus having a reservation unless it is only a few days before you leave." Does this mean that I won't be able to buy a tcket as there are only 2 days and have to just turn up?

Yep, on Monday you can buy a ticket for Thursday's bus but you cannot on Wednesday. At least it has always worked that way for me. But I have always been able to get on the bus when I showed up Thursday but they tell you there are no guarantees.

The reason has to do with the reservation system. You and I normally think about a computerized data base with every location accessing the same database via the internet. But this is Cuba. It takes a few days for the data about tickets sold remotely to trickle in since it all via paper. They need a few days to insure someone at the destination ticket office has not sold a round trip ticket taking up the last seat before they sell you a ticket..

Might be too late for Simon, but FWIW:
I bought bus tickets out of Havana, from the Station opposite Zoo in November 2010,and Nov 2012 both less than 24hrs before departure. Purchased the day before and had a confirmed seat. Paid the freight for bicycle just before departure.Never had a problem.
I was told due to street construction near Plaza Revolucion station(Nov 2012), it was easier to access main station. Never checked, but went right to main station opposite Zoo as it was a pleasant ride up from Malecon at 23rd.
There are at least 4 good Casas in Jaguey Grande we have stayed in last few years while cycle touring. Never stopped in Australia.

But what is the reason I get no tickets online? Do you have any idea?
I get the message:
Lamentamos informarle que su reserva con codigo 55248, ha sido rechazada.
El centro de pago, devolvio el error: TRANSACCION DENEGADA POR DIVERSOS MOTIVOS
No dude en contactarnos si tiene alguna pregunta o comentario.

Contacting Viazul I never got an answer.

It appears there was a problem processing your credit card.
