domestic flights
have had trouble finding direct flights from Oaxaca to Cancun or San Cristobal. All my searches show connecting via Mexico City. Is this correct?thanxinadvanz

San Cristobal does not have an airport. There is a service from Oaxaca to Tuxtla on Aerotucan (see www,aerotucan.com.mx for contact phone number) and San Cristobal is an hour from there. Otherwise all flights will connect in Mexico City.2
One of the oddities of air travel everywhere is that last year I paid less to fly from Merida to Oaxaca via Mexico City than the flight from Merida terminating in Mexico City. I know this because I checked into flying to Mexico City and then bussing to Oaxaca.3
"... Is this correct?" Yes with Aeromexico and Interjet. Once in Mexico City you transfer to another flight to Cancun. May seem counter-intuitive but still quicker than a bus from Oaxaca to Cancun. For getting to San Cristobal de las Casas is to fly to Tuxtla Guttierrez and than taking a bus (or shuttle if available) to San Cristobal de las Casas. There's no (commercial) airport in San Cristobal de las Casas so Tuxtla Guttierrez is the closest airport instead.4
Just for information, the low cost Mexican airline VivaAerobus, has non stop service from both Mexico City and from Cancun to Tuxtla. You wont find them on any search engines since they dont pay anyone a commission,
