Please help with South America ideas/itinerary

Hi! Hola!

Need help with ideas for a 10 month trip around South America - March 2013-Nov 2013? Has anyone does a successful highlights trip of the continent? We could fly a couple of times to make sure we take in everything.

Any tips for success?

Ideas for a cheap flight from Guatemala City to S America? One way.

Thanks so much

10 months is a good amount of time.

Not enough to see everything, but a lot for sure!

Have you got/read a guidebook like the LP 'South America' ?......that has plenty of stuff on 'highlights' and the so-called 'must-sees' etc.

Guatemala is not the best entry point for South America though....far more choice (and cheaper) going from Panama City or even from Mexico City.Esp.to Colombia...I guess you will want to start there?

Alternatively you can go overland (and boat through the Darien) to Colombia from Panama easily enough.

10 months, you should have no worries fitting in what you want to do. Even on a long trip like yours I think flying to a few places rather then travelling long distances is a good option if you have the buidget for it.

As Lucapal says, starting in Colombia makes sense to me so you can head South and then be in Patagonia in the Summer at the end of your trip.

Enjoy! You'll have a great time - I'm just back from 15 months in South America: Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay-Chile-Peru-Colombia-Ecuador-Bolivia-Brazil. Totally mind-blowing. The number of possible itineraries is huge. For some ideas I kept a blog of all our stops in SA:

www.mytb.org/will-and-alex

If you see anything that particularly piques your interest you let me know and I can tell you more about it.

One thing though: a Mar-Nov trip means you're going to miss out on the best of the Southern Summer, so you may want to think carefully about Patagonia. It's splendid, by very far my favourite place in the world, but you'll be in SA outside its summer. Having said that, November and March/April could still be very interesting. April will be autumnal, could be brilliant.

Have fun planning - you'll have the time of your life in South America. Believe me. It's a totally exhilarating continent. And in 10 months you could become fluent in Spanish, if you're not already!

Have a look at www.suramericacontraelreloj.blogspot.com for ideas.

It's in both Spanish and English so on (almost) any given post you will find both.

We drove around the continent over 11 months, however the ideas are obviously valid for any means of transport.

If you have questions (and assuming that messaging is reinstated some time soon) send us an email (or message via the blog).

PS - from GUA-BOG we have taken Avianca/TACA (one code share ticket, one TACA flight & one Avianca flight).

Sorry, that is what happens when you haven't used TT for a while and you hit the enter button at the wrong time. My blog is here.

The overland trip I was trying to recommend is from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni - the scenery is incredible. Just beware of the altitude.

Have fun
