any cycle tourist still lurking about TT?In the continuing absence of the On Your Bike I was just wondering if there are any Americas cycle tourists still lurking around these parts...
I'm in Medellin heading southwards in Colombia before turning back towards Venezuela and the Amazon in Brazil before heading further south. I've been having some problems with my bike and would really like to be posting some questions in a bike friendly space but.... sigh.
Problem number one is kind of weird - I keep breaking spokes on my front wheel, mostly when I'm on a long steep descent and the rim is starting to heat up a bit. The spokes break more or less in the middle. It seems strange to me. Any ideas?
Any informed input very welcome. Thanks.

I'm not in south america but I'm on a long cycle tour too and had the same issue with spokes breaking in the middle when I arrived in NZ. After another 4 broke while I was in the process of mending the first and carrying only 4 replacement spokes I went to a bike shop and had my whole wheel rebuilt. basically the guy there builds bikes and said he'd heard of a faulty batch which may explain this breaking in the middle. also recommended replacing them all as once one goes they all can start to go. I've had no problems since and have done another 6000km on then
hope this helps and good luck for the rest of your journey

nice to hear from you. i'm not so sure how easy getting quality spokes here is going to be but i think you are probably right.
(any ideas on a good cycle forum in the continuing absence of OYB? - I've been looking around but haven't found a good alternative yet. i'm pretty disappointed with TT's sense of responsibility to it's community)
