Route 66, Chicago-Springfield, IL
So, I've got to head to Springfield soon and I was considering taking what's left of route 66 in order to break up some of the boredom of driving I-55. Has anyone done this route before and do you know if there is anything worth seeing or stopping for along the way? Or should I just scratch that idea and save myself some time and take I-55. If I remember right, route 66 will add about an hour, at least, to my travel time.thanks for your help!

Nothing at all to see. Be prepared for snow/ice/winter conditions, and if anything,if you have time to spare, head to Starved Rock SP and hike and have a meal, then head to Chicago, in winter, this area is pretty.2
Ive done most every bit of the remaining parts of route 66, and if you like small town USA, following it can be a great way to take it in.There is a lot of route 66 left, you just have to do a bit of work to find a lot of it.
Here is a good place to start.

I work for the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway and we would be more than happy to help you plan a small trip. There are a lot of things to see between Chicago and Springfield!!! Highly recommend stopping at the Joliet History Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center, the Berwyn Route 66 Museum, and all of the Pontiac IL attractions. You should visit our website to get more information (it is just too much to post here) www.illinoisroute66.org . If you send a message and request information from the website (use the "Contact Us" tab) I will be more than happy to mail you all the information that we have. Have a fun and safe trip!!!ADVERTISEMENT
