Visa

Hey!
I did a lot of research on the visa for Mauritania, but still I have some questions. According to this forum it seems that you necessarily need to get your visa in advance and the best would be in Rabat. My Lonely Planet for West Africa (latest version) says though that a visa in advance costs about 35euros whereas getting it at the border only 20euros. This implicits that it's possible to get it at the border for me.
And secondly, is it the only possibility to get the visa in Morocco in Rabat? No chance of getting it in Marrakesh?

I hope someone can help me on this one. Thanks in advance!

From my experience, Rabat is the only place. The LPs are not as current as they should be and the rules for visas change more often then you think. I'm American and we were only able to get them in Rabat starting a little over a year ago. The border used to be okay, but they changed the rules without warning and according to posts, numerous overlanders had to go back after making the 1000k journey to the border. Do you really want to risk it for a 15 euro savings?

Know of someone who is on here occasionally who got his in Rabat in December

However there seems to be a limit of 100 visas per day, he slept there overnight on his second attempt; the first attempt of arriving at 9am found him too late to get one. Apparently people arrive from 5am onwards

Doesn't make things easy for the rest of us but at least you know what to do!

Nowadays it is not very busy and if you join the queue at 7.30 or so you should get your visa the same afternoon. I was there in Rabat 2 weeks ago, forget about Marrakech or the border issuing visas. Price 400 Dirham, about 36 Euros.
good luck!

Interesting, as I read on here that getting one at the border was easy, and indeed that is my plan.

It was the case AlanBrent but it's a LOOOONG way north if you're refused

The new rule came into force about 2 years ago ... be careful!

Hey guys, thqnks for qll the answers!

I`m in Rabat and I got my visa today. I went there in the morning, filled out the form, gave them two pictures and two copies of my passport as well as 340dirham. In the afternoon I picked it up. Piece of cake.
And Kira is right, it was possible to get the visa at the border, but not anymore.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that visas are NOT currently available at the border and that the Mauri embassy in Rabat is the ONLY place in Morocco where they are available. Any information to the contrary is either out of date or involved paying a bribe to get something arranged; which may be possible.
