Hotel near International Airport

My family is moving to Tanzania. We arrive at 9pm in Arusha. Wondering what the safest way to reach a basic hotel would be seeing as we have about 10 bags of luggage and a little toddler to travel with? Any suggestions on a hotel CLOSE to the airport or an affordable place in Arusha with a shuttle service?
THANKS!

Hi and welcome to the TT Africa page. You do not say whereabouts in TZ you are going to live for the one or two years. So this is a bit general. Arusha is about 25-35 km west of Kilimanjaro International Airport (and apart from the airport there is really nothing else there). There is nothing suitable near the airport in the way of accommodation.

There will be taxis etc to meet you on arrival but with your luggage and people numbers then some arrangements are in order. There are a number of international 3-4-5 star hotels in Arusha now (check the guide books and google). Some of them have their own mini buses - others have an arrangement with other providers. Check out the ones you are interested in - send an email and see what their responses are. Most will be able to help but it will cost - somewhere around $50-75 US (possibly $100). Hope this helps!

Hi, good idea to move to TZ. One thing which I can recommend is the Hostel in the Rehabilitation Center from the German Lutheran Church in Usa River, which is about half hours drive halfway between KIA and Arusha. They provide shuttle service and really affordable room rates. It is not so well known, but clean and on sunday afternoons the meeting point of the volunteers around in the nice cafeteria. In Usa River are also some clean guest houses, and Claus, the pastor, can for sure recommend something, if his hostel is full. You can Google it.

Hello, you have mentioned arrival 9pm at Arusha, do you mean arusha town or Kilimanjaro airport? i guess is Kilimanjaro airport and if so there is a Kia lodge just 3-5 minutes drive from the airport, i used it on my first day in Tanzania and hope to use it again next February. you can Google it for more infos.

Hi #3, he mentioned a budget accomodation, KIA Lodge charges about 200 USD at present. And this flight is probably the KLM from Amsterdam, which is landing at KIA. The first possibility of Lodges in direction Arusha is Usa River, there are about 10 Tourist Lodges because of climbing Mt. Meru and Arusha NP, and a crowd of very good guest houses. It is the first place, where you can get good accomodation for a reasonable price. I know it, because I live here.

I was in Arusha and Kilimanjaro airport in November of 2012. It is $50 US from the airport into town. Or, if you can manage to look behind the sea of taxi drivers there are very nice, reliable safe shuttle buses for $10 per person. They are shared so you may be able to work something out with the driver. Also stayed at the Honey Badger Lodge. Beautiful, Large Rooms, great food, pool and great communication with the owner for arrangements over email!
