A few questions, me and my hubby are going to be flying in to China on 17th May, i have a few questions to anyone who has recently travelled to China.
When you did your visa application, did you have to give them an itenary? I have heard this can be the case but we have made a rough plan of places we want to visit but was not intending to do a strict plan and take it each day as it comes.
However we are intending to book our first few nights in a hostel in Beijing, there seem sto be a few recommended through hostelworld, has anyone got any recommendations?? we are looking for cheap but somewhere where we can met and chill ,have some beers with others etc. but we are 31 , not 18 so any advice from people who has been would be great!!!

Yes you give them an itinerary and copies of your plan tickets. It does not have to be your real itinerary though. Just book some hotels and cancel them after you get your visa. Make sure you book something that you can cancel. It does not matter where you really go.Hotels are not that expensive in China so I never stay in hostels. Maybe others have ideas.

I am a tour operator for 25 years. You will need a copy of your itinerary, and a copy of your confirmed international air to and from China. In many cases a letter of invitation from a tour company may be requested but maybe not in your case. They will ask questions however. If you want to see a visa application go to CIBT.com and download their visa kit China and put in your state. If you put down hotels as suggested above they may ask for copies of your confirmed reservations along with the addresses and contact information especially since you are not on an organized tour. It does not pay to be dishonest or you will get turned down for a visa and if turned down may never get another opportunityh in the future. Hope this helps.4
JPDeM is right, follow that advice. Getting "turned down" just means that they don't process it all, they just send you home to redo the paperwork and try again.Chinese booking websites such as elong and ctrip are a good source of cancellable hotel bookings. For most places you pay nothing up front so you can easily cancel.
But you haven't said where you are applying and what nationality you hold. This is important as some embassies vary in their requirements.

Thanks Everyone for your advice.We are both British, i think another issue we may face is that we have not booked a flight from China - just a one way ticket into china as we intend to travel from China to Vietnam by train, I was going to go and get the Visa from Manchester embassy but i may use a company to help guide us through this.

#5Either book a fake flight out of China and show that in your itinerary.
or book a cheapish real flight out of China, and then count it as a cost which you will lose.
or, write a very detailed itinerary showing that you plan to go through China and stop in Kunming and then Nanning, before departing into Vietnam. Having hotels bookings in Nanning would be more convincing. Remember it is easy to book hotels and then cancel when you have your visa.
The more information you can provide the Visa Office in Manchester, the less likley that you will be rejected. You still have to use the official agency and pay the 'application fee' on top of the visa. See http://www.visaforchina.org/MAN_EN/ - so don't pay any more extra by using another company as well.
