2 month itinerary summer 2013Hi guys... and girls !!
I will be traveling from early june to early august 2013 in Central America and I have few questions regarding safety issues and planning..
Considering I have 2 months, I suppose going from Panama to Guatemala is too tight right? What would you recommend? Skip Panama... Start in Costa Rica, hea to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Gutemala? Start in Belize and head down to Costa Rica. I have been to Honduras so I dont mind skipping Honduras and doing El Salvador.
Also, how safe it is for me to travel alone? I know people have been telling me to avoid the buses and the partying... That's fine. I'm not much of a party animal anyways.
Finally... if anyone wants to join... feel free !!

1I would fly into El Salvador or Belize and fly out of the other, spending a month or so in Guatemala in the middle. If Cancun flights are decidedly cheaper, maybe fly in or out of there instead of Belize.
My photos with blog and travelogue links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - all my recommendations are embedded there. Happy trails!

2I think its too tight...2 months for me is ok for a decent look at 3-4 countries in the region.
Which ones depends on your interests...what do you like doing? You could try Nicaragua,CR and Panama.....or El Salvador,Guate and Belize as mentioned above.
On safety..it is safe enough,if you take the usual precautions. No need to avoid buses (how else are you going to get around?) or even to avoid partying...though I would avoid being drunk and wandering around alone at night.

3What do you like to do? Hike volcanoes? Explore Spanish Colonial towns? Surfing? Scuba? Foodie? Nature/Wildlife? National Parks? Beaches?
Guatemala is the cultural gem, you need 3-4 weeks to see the main areas, then you could head to Belize and go diving?
Or, Nicaragua, need about 10 days for main 4 highlights, add a week for Corn Islands, more for surfing on Pacific side beaches. Costa Rica you need 3 weeks to see the many and varying National Parks, ecosystems and nature, two coast, and lot of surf towns. You then could head to Panama, where you have San Blas and Kuna/Yula indians.
So you could go Guatemala/belize or down to Nicaragua. Or you go Nicaragua/Costa Rica and Panama.
Safety is all relative. Read the guidebooks, the routes and backpacker circuit is well defined and 99% of travelers have no issues.

4Wow.. Thanks for your advice. I dont mind skipping Belize... as it is more expensive.
Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica and in my tops. Is Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica fine for 2 months? I would think so.
Also, I know it is considered the rainy season in june-july but is it RAINY RAINY ??? Or just an hour or two in the afternoon. Is backpacking 2 months to consider during the time of year or would recommend not going?
Thanks again for your advice !!

5I think for countries is pushing it but doable, depends how far afield you get, or want to get, two weeks per country is fine, but it may force your pace, where as 3 would allow you to sink into a place you find right up your alley, or maybe just your idea of a retreat, and hang there with a good book.
No worries rainy season is the best time overall, green and lush, its summer, Oct thru Nov can be dicey with hurricanes and a lot of tropical lows in the region- otherwise, part of the day.
I am willing to bet the biggest issues for you will be sunburn and bug bites, maybe some hot bus rides, just travel light, wash as you go, buy some things you like in each place, flip flops, a nice sandal and a trek shoe is all you need, some microfibre hike pants/shorts and then its dress for summer, maybe a few sundresses and your ready to roll.

6SoloHobo... Thank you !! You have pumped me... I cant wait now !! Thanks for your advice... I think I will add another week to travel from Guate to Costa Rica.
In Costa Rica... what beach would you recommend on the pacific coast? I would like to surf/practice surfing and I will be covering Tortugero on the carribean side. I am hesitating between Jaco, Dominical, Montezuma, Tamarindo and Corcovado. I would not mind covering 2 of these cities.
Many thanks again

8Avoid Jaco- a non stop bachelor party
Dominical is nice but not for the novice, hard o swim there...
Montezuma is a bohemian yoga organic hippy cool, around bend is best, Mal Pais/Santa Teresa.
Tamarindo is a sufers mecca, a tad booming as of late, but nice combo of great beach, surf shop/schools and good nightlife...
Caribe side is limited surfing options for beginner, Playa Cocles just south of Pt Viejo, depending on the month, weather this side can be opposite as Pacific side, so play by ear. If you have time, both coast are a nice contrast, as the afro caribe is more rustic an indigenous and the pacific side is more developed and refined.
Many people go from Pt Viejo to Bocas del Toro across Sixola border crossing here, then to PC via Boquette/David.
Sorry no FAQ at present, here are some links, from south to north.
King Quality and Tica Bus are the main transit busses between capitals when busting a move thru a country.
Nicaraguas caribe side, great blog..
