Unmarried couple - acceptable behaviour in Dubai
My boyfriend and I are staying at the Kempinski hotel, Ajman, in late May and I was hoping for some first hand advice on acceptable behaviour for unmarried couples within the hotel/ on the beach please? I have checked and they are fine for us to share a room!Obviously, we're not planning on any public heavy petting, but a bit of light romance - holding hands etc would be nice!
I'm guessing we must be very conservative at the airport and outside the hotel?
Any answers gratefully received as Google searches are giving very conflicting answers.
Thanks

This is hard to pin though, it depends where you are. In general, Dubai is fairly liberal, but in public maybe just refrain from showing too much affection. People usually wont say anything, but its not what the locals do, so just out of a basic level of respect for them.2
In general you need to remember that it is a Muslim country where public displays of affection (such as kissing or holding hands) are not appreciated and have actually led to arrests (although this is very rare). However, within the hotel I don't think you need to be too worried. Outside of the hotel, you need to be more careful and dress conservatively. Bear in mind that Ajman is more conservative than Dubai. Of all the Emirates which make up the UAE, Dubai is probably the least conservative. Have a look at the 'Local Laws and Customs' section of this page: http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=8524
I think once you get there you will soon get an idea of what is acceptable and what is not.

Ajman is not Dubai, it's a different emirate altogether. In Dubai it's absolutely fine to hold hands (I've seen Emirati couples doing it, not often, but I've seen it) and a peck on the cheek is also fine. In Ajman you should exercise a bit more restraint when out and about but in your hotel complex you'll be fine.
