Getting to Kyzyl, Tuva

We need to get to Kyzyl, Tuva's capital, in July, but we cannot for the life of us find a way to get there. Apparently there is a flight from Moscow but we cannot find anywhere. In fact we cannot find any flights from Kyzyl to any other city. The Transiberian from Moscow takes two days and then there is another 13h train to catch and a 5h taxi ride afterwards. It is sort of mad. How do you get there??

Hi

yes, it is that hard to get there. There might be some flights directly to Kyzyl from other cities nearby (I see only 5 flights weekly from Krasnoyarsk), you could also fly to Abakan and then take a marshrutka, but I think it will be longer than 5 hrs, allthough I cannot tell you exactly as we cycled this summer from Kyzyl to Abakan. There are also two or three busses a day from Krasnoyarsk. Try to do the stretch in daytime it is quite beautiful, unfortunately we had rain in the Ergakis. You can see some pictures here .

Cheers

Kyzyl is pretty isolated. There are flights there from Krasnoyarsk and (I think) Abakan, but currently no direct flights from Moscow. There is a coach (bus) from Abakan to Kyzyl (takes about 8 hours I think) and plenty of shared taxis leaving from Abakan station when the trains arive. Shared taxi takes about 5-6 hours and costs about 5000 rub in total, usually divided between 4 passengers. The drive across Ergaki is quite spectacular.
