5 days in and around Delhi (or maybe further afield??) Advice please!

Hi there!

Later this year I will be doing some work experience as a teaching assistant in Delhi, while doing this most of my days will be full so have left myself 5 days free at the end of the programme for some 'holiday time'

I am at a complete loss at what to do with this time!!! I am a solo female traveler so am slightly wary about just heading off and doing something on my own. So any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am not looking spend hefty amounts of money, but perhaps a tour would be a good idea? Would be a shame to miss out on things like the Taj Mahal and Jaipur while being so close! Or maybe I could go further afield, so any ideas for cheap-ish beach resorts that would be fairly easy to get to and back would be welcome too.

Would be particularly interested to hear from other lone female travelers and their experiences.
Many thanks :)
Kiki

G (Gap) Adventures has a 3 or 5 day tour so you can check that out.

Independent travel to India for first-timer can be scary for most folks--male or female. That said, my India experience was more positive and less scary than I feared. People are quite friendly and helpful. Though Delhi and Agra seem to worst of all places I visited because they are pretty much the foreign tourist hubs.

In Agra, check out Hotel Sidhartha. It is a very basic hotel, but clean, good customer service, and within a few steps of the West Gate. Best to visit Taj Mahal between Monday-Thursday to avoid huge crowds. Fatephur Sikri is far grander than Delhi's Red Fort and its neigboring mosque.

Well, I would suggest that you travel with at least a friend or two. A string of rape incidents in Delhi the past year have unfortunately not resulted in higher security. Men are not afraid. I'm sorry to say this about the country I love, but I think it's slowly becoming the rape capital of the world. And as a solo foreign female traveler, you will be at risk, not only of heinous crimes, but also of scams, touts and robbery.
That said, Delhi is a nice place. Soak in the indian experience, see the Qutub Minar, the Jantar Manter, the Red Fort and you can do the golden triangle trip. Delhi-Agra-Jaipur. You can also try visiting the Taj Mahal at night, for a different experience.
