There is only one daily train all the way down the Nigiri railway, which leaves early afternoon, the deprture time is either 13.00 or 14.00. You will not get to Coimbatore before sunset.My strong advice is dont take the bus instead.

hello,As indicated by Mr: Graham,use the train service up to coimbatore(kovai).the train service UNESCOs listed heritage service.From coimbatore-pollachi-Udumalpett( a lot of bus avilable,)-Marayur/Munnar(bus on 20/30 Minutes only in day time,and a few on night.no train up to coimbatore.3
If I'm reading this correctly, I can take the train up to Ooty then bus back to Coimbatore and another bus to Munnar? Or if I take the train down from Ooty, I'm pretty much forced to spend the night in Coimbatore before catching a bus to Munnar the following day?Thanks.

Went from Munnah to Ooty the reverse of what you want to do but maybe it will be of some assistance.Munnah to Udumalpetti 3-4 hours then we changed at the bus station to a bus to Coimbatore.
At Coimbatore we had to change to another bus station and get a bus to the place where the toy train starts-Mettapalam. It was a long day about 7-8 hours.
Next day we took the steam train to Ooty from Mettapalam
It seems to involve a few buses(n=3).
I think however there may have been a 5am bus from Munnah direct.So I am assuming Ooty may have an early bus dierct to Munnah.
Unfortunately the LP guide is of little help.
Things are a little vague as I am out of the country now.

from Munnar,there is a direct bus to coimbatore on morning 6.30am and 1.30pm,it need 6.30 hrs to reach,and no bus direct to ooty. a lot of bus from udumalai - coibatore-mettupalayam,then take toy train. tTake care.

I took the train from Ooty to Mettupalayam 3 days ago, shared a taxi to Coimbatore train station, spent the night, then on Friday took a direct bus to Munnar at 8:15 am from the Ukkadam bus station - a 3 Rs local bus ride on numerous buses from in front of the train station. 6 hrs to Munnar with a couple of decent breaks to grab a bite or some fruit.
