Nice beach destination in Albania in May

Dear Albania experts,

We're a group of friends that are traveling to Albania for the first time to explore its nature, culture and nightlife. We are planning to go in May to Tirana, Berat, the mountains around Berat, and we would like to go to a beach area, but we're not sure which one yet. Obviously the beaches around Drymades are most well known, but seeing that we are going down there in the beginning of May, beach season probably hasn't started yet, and we're wondering if it's worth the trip going all the way down there. So basically the question is: are there beaches that are just as nice as the ones in the south, but closer to Tirana or Berat? There is the one in Durres of course, but I've heard it's not very nice. We are looking for a beautiful beach, and it would be a bonus if there was something to do/see around there as well! Thanks in advance.

Best wishes,
Steven

No!
Durres beach is neither nice nor unpolluted.
Seawater temperature may be around 18 degrees centigrade/64 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Southern beaches are closer to Corfu airport than to Tirana airport.

The sea's a bit cold and some of the hotels will be closed or doing renovations, but it won't be a problem to find a place to eat and sleep. Himara, Dhermi, Bors are all good bases. The hiking around there is nice too. Got a car? Let it depend on the weather, if it's sunny and you have a few days to spare, go for it. Plan all day for the drive, stop off at Apolonia near Fier for some cool ruins and a good lunch spot.

Ksmali just south of Saranda and across from Curfu island has some nice, small beaches, so i could recommend this, and nearby are some roman ruins to check out too. However plz dont get your hopes up too much about beaches in Albania, its not like Greeks islands at all, and almost every stretch of beach has serious problems with litter and pollution. For locals, they are more party/gathering places than an idyllic place to sunbathe and swim.

Unfortunately I didn't spend enough time in Albania last year, but all the locals I talked to in Tirana or other cities kept talking wonders about the Albanian Riviera, so I guess that's your best bet.

I did go to Durrës, and the beach there is not nice. The town itself, except for a few redeeming features, looks like a Benidorm for Kosovars.

They are all the same as Durres in my view. Of course for them it's their riveria, but they likely dont have much to compare it too.

There is a huge difference between Durres (where I wouldn't even go into the water if I were paid for) and the lovely beaches in the Greek speaking South: Drimades, Himera, Hexamilio, Palermo and many other in between.

Looks like the sad Greeks have taken over the Albanian section of this forum.

Back to the topic: Your best bet for that time of the year would be Saranda as it is a large town/city and near a nice clean beach, along with some famous ruins being very close by. This is as far South as you can go though and a long way from Tirana, so might not be an option for you. Otherwise, along the beautiful riviera (and don't listen to what they say here, it really is stunning) you with have the views, but it won't be very lively around May I am afraid. Hope this helps!

The "Riviera" is just the Drimades - Himera area I mentioned above. Hexamilio/Ksamil is a nice sandy beach 10 miles south of Saranda, close to the archeological site of Butrinti.

If your going to Berat then it isnt really that far to the coast, stayed in Sarande and Himare and it was beautiful, seems a bit early in the season to see much night life, but the sights are great, Llogara pass is beyond words. Actually drove Mother Theresa airport to Sarande in 5-6 hrs. Can also take a ferry SarandeCorfu.Hope you enjoy your stay as much as I did!

Hello,

Between Saranda and Vlora, the coast is very beautiful with less buildings and construction than you have around Saranda or on the north part of the Albanian coast.
Bradt (guidebook) give some advices.

Dear Steven,
The best place for night life in May will be Tirana and during the day time you can drive to the lovely beach in Lalzi Bay not far from Tirana, Is located between Tirana and Durres, so don't have to go Durres beach or If you Will sent 1-2 nights in Berat Will be nice too, after you can go to Dhermi beach is one of the best in Albanian Riviera.
