Camping in the DR

Hey! I am going to the DR- Punta Cana for a wedding in April. I have been there 2 times with my family on an all-inclusive vacation, so I am looking to do something different this time around. I have a male friend coming with me, and we were thinking of camping. We want to hike, dive, etc, and explore the island as much as possible. We will probably have about a week or 10 days. We aren't going to stay in Puntca Cana the whole time, probably just a couple days around the wedding. Any thoughts on camping, or is this just crazy? Also any good suggestions for hikes/dive spots would be much appreciated. Any suggestions on cheapest way to get around the island?

Thanks :)

Camping doesn't really take place in the DR except perhaps as part of a trip to Pico Durate. Best to use the network of small local hotels and pensions across the country.

From PC Expresso Bavaro is the best bus service to the capital. In Santo Domingo Caribe Tours have buses to all other parts of the isalnd - SW, NW, Santiago, Jarabacoa, North Coast and Samana - all worth visiting. Buses are very cheap - about US$10 SD to Samana.

Pico Duarte is worth considering and you would need your own equipemnt + tent to get there.

You can camp in Las Galeras. Check out www.elcabito.net. I camped there for 8 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it: beautiful place, laid back, lovely owners, excellent restaurant, peaceful... simply wonderful spot to camp. And there is lots to keep you happy and active in and around Las Galleras for at least one week. La Hacienda in Las Galleras also has camping facilities (they provide tents), but I did not check them out.
