True, it is not licensed for sale in South America.

Even in countries where it is available, it is not given away, except by government or NGO programs that use it to treat malaria in clinics for the very poor.

Malarone is hard to find in South America. And, quite rightly in my view, it's not locally available for free to tourists and travellers who can - unlike the poor - afford it. It is an expensive drug and there is no reason in the world why you should get it for nothing. A woman with kids in a malarial area living on less than $1 a day is a different matter.

If you need antimalarials and cost is an issue, then take a look at doxycyline.

or just avoid the few areas where malaria is really an issue in Southamerica. 98% of the places where most tourists go are malaria free
