Suggestions for quick trip during Tet?

Quite unexpectedly, I have an opportunity to visit Vietnam from Feb. 17 - 26. I have to be in Ho Chi Minh for work on the 25th and 26th, will probably also spend the 23rd and 24th there too. For the rest of the time I am looking to see a bit of the country (maybe just Hoi An) and then spend a few days at a quiet beach with decent surf (for splashing around in, not surfing). I am thinking of flying into Danang (for Hoi An) and then hitting a beach on my way to HCMC - or, I could hit a beach around Hoi An, but I am led to believe that the surf there in Feb. is a bit dangerous.

I am wondering if people have any advice on where to go? I have travelled extensively through Thailand, Cambodia and Laos - but never Vietnam. My favorite places for relaxing in the past (and this was about 7 years ago) were the end of the road places in Ko Lanta and Ocheteaul Beach in Sihanoukville. Not looking to party up - just a laid-back, clean and inexpensive place to relax on a beach with some waves, read a book and eat some good food. Also open to suggestions about non beach places I shouldn't miss - assuming i can fit them into such a short visit. A possible complication is that this will be during Tet, which could complicate finding a quiet place and getting around.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tet holidays are over on the 17th feb, so you will miss that chaotic period
if traveling south, make travel plans asap because folks will be returning to HCM to work ...

Oh, that's good to know. I am dealing with universities and am told they won't be returning until the 25th. Is the entire week from the 17th to the 25th tough for travel south?

Still transportation problems at your dates, many Viets extend their vacation. For a short time, I would forget going all the way to Hoi An, stay in the South, with a visit of the magic Mekong Delta and they fly to Phu Quoc FROM CAN THO or to Con Dao (less developed) from Saigon

^ larsay is 100% spot on. OP You only have a short time. Stay near HCMC. Rather than flying to Hoi An fly to Phu Quoc or Con Dao island. If you fly to Hoi An you will waste most of a day. Think like this 30mins travelling to HCMC airport. Wait at airport 1 hour. well over one hour to Da nang. 30 mins at Da Nang airport for luggage and waiting for taxi. 45mins - 1 hour travelling to Da Nang, and then vice versa.

The last thing anyone needs on a short holiday is wasting time running around.

Phu Quoc or Con Dao island and maybe you're in your room or on the beach in about an hour from leaving HCMC. Save time, save money and stress and travel close to HCMC.

I totally agree with the posters above: Phu Quoc/Con Dao and the Mekong would be a good combination. I really enjoyed the areas around Ben Tre and Chau Doc, though Can Tho was also pleasant and makes a good floating markets base.

^ you can see a lot within a small area, saving a lot of time travelling all over the place.

You'll find plenty of interesting places and things to do in the southern area. Try to restrict travel & transfers to a minimum. That way you can enjoy your holiday rather than wasting time sitting on your arse getting from A to B.
