Travel around Sri Lanakan new year?
Hello All!We are thinking of traveling in Sri Lanka during April. I note that on the lonely planet introduction they warn against travel around the 14th April due to the new year.
Would people agree with this? We were considering flying out on this date, would that be foolhardy? Perhaps, on the contrary, new year is a great time to be there and we should get involved?
Our other option is to go in September. Given the choice, when would you visit, April or September?
Many thanks and kind regards
Eddie

The only thing to be aware of is that the west coast, places like Hikkaduwa, pretty much close down after their new year and business shifts to the south coast and over towards Arugan bay.In Hikkaduwa they have a cricket match each year - Married Men vs Single Men. We had a lot of fun there last year and then headed down to the south.

hiit will be a good time to travel to SL since you will get to experience the new year. on the new year day it self there won't be lot of public transport and most of the shops will be closed. other than that it won't be a problem at all. best things is to spend few days around new year at a one place so you can look around and enjoy the new year with local people
good luck
