Hi Robin, I guess from your name you are not an Indian national? Travelling in the Nagaland/Assam region is possible if you are a foreigner, I did it in November, but it is difficult, mainly because of the political situation. Read my blog for the notes I made while when I was there. The main route to Imphal from Kohima was closed by protesters and the town in a state of siege; with no petrol available by the time I left (by air). The situation can change day by day.The concept of ‘self drive’ doesn’t really exist in India, any vehicle you might hire will come with a driver. I’m sure it’s possible to hire a minivan for the trip you want to do, as British veterans groups go to Kohima and Imphal to visit the cemeteries and battlefields. Try The Royal British Legion, or the Kohima Educational Trust as they are likely to have arranged transport.
Bare in mind that the North East region is to all intend under military occupation, so you may not be able to go where you want, when you want, even if protestors aren’t blocking the roads.

Hi! Thanks a lot for your comment. I'm Slovenian and I travel with 10 people there. I appreciate your blog but I'm concerned about our trip b'cos we suppose to go from Imphal to Kohima as you wanted. I would like to hire a minibus with a driver of course...I can't get any information about a current situation. Do you have any idea?
Have you been somewhere else in NE India?
Regards, Robin

I live in Assam right now, and according to my friends, it is not really safe to drive out of Imphal without a guide. I would strongly suggest coming to Silchar by flight, and then rent a minivan here. You can go pretty much anywhere in Assam without any security problems, as long as you don't stop in some forested hills in the middle of the night. If you come to Silchar (which is an interesting place to visit), please let me know! I will be here until June.
