Polonnaruwa guest house
How did the Samudra guest house get top rating? The mosquito nets are full of holes, sheets and mattresses blood stained from previous mosquito victims, we could not lock our door properly.A place where you stay because you run out of money and then forget about it as soon as you can.On top of this the owner scammed us of Rs1000 on a car trip to Sirigiya, claiming that the normal route was flooded and the detour needed an additional Rs1000. There was no flooding and the driver used the regular route without any problems.Beware!

I can't agree with you more. The place is an absolute dive! Dire, dirty and depressing.I checked in there as it was the 3rd place I looked at but when I went back to my room I realized it was just too depressing for words and went up the road to the Siyanco Holiday resort ...with a pool!
I have a 20 year old copy of Lonely Planet Sri Lanka and even then it said the Samudra was dirty and to be avoided. Bizzare that with no change to the place in 20 years it can go from being awful to being 'top choice'.

#2 yes 'Top Choice' in the current LP and 'to be avoided' in LP 20 years ago.Bumats they were further away from the 'centre' of Polonnaruwa and the AC room was taken. The Syanco was just so much better than the otheres and the pool did it for me! I loved being 2 mins from the huge lake, 5 mins from the ancient city and having a lovely swimming pool in that sweltering heat. Friends stayed at Leesha and Palm GH.
Prices in latest LP are way out. You need to double or treble most of them. Nothing even vaguely decent in SL under 3000Rs. Better to spend 4000 and get something quite OK
I absolutely loved Polonaruwa. One of my favourite places. In August you should be able to negotiate a better deal. Give the Samudra a wide birth. I wouldn't pay there if you paid me!
Go and see the Lake Hotel on the edge of the lake behind Village Pollonnaruwa.
$150 per night. I'm going to stay there in my next life!!! Absolutel heaven!

Yes SL is expensive compared to India and SE Asia. The other places in Polonnaruwa that I looked at were 2500-3000. The LP 2012 edition is way out of date in every way! I paid 5000 for my place with a pool and that was after haggling!Where else are you going? I spent 5 weeks there last July/August. Anuradhapura I would recommend Little Paradise (3K) and Ella it would be Sun top (2-3K). Ella was good for the soul! If they get the PM thing working here that would be great!
