Pick up Chinese visa in Kathmandu?

Hi,

I have just booked a flight to Kunming. I want to know if I can sort the visa a the chinese embassy in Kathmandu.

Do I just turn up at the embassy or do I need to fill the online form in first and take this to the embassy?

I am from the UK any info and I would be grateful.

Embassy of China in Kathmandu, Nepal
Baluwater
City: Kathmandu
Phone: (977-1)4419053
Fax: (977-1)4414045
Web Site: http://www.chinaembassy.org.np
Email: consular@chinaembassy.org.np
Office Hours: 09:00-12:00 (Monday-Friday) 15:00-17:00

Firstly, note the above opening hours. 9am-12 & 3-5pm

Secondly, it very much depends on your nationality. Americans pay a lot more ($130) because their government charges steep visa fees for Chinese citizens entering the USA

Thirdly they have a 3 tier payment system. Ordinary 3 working days, 2 working days (doubles the cost) & 1 working day (triples the cost)

As an Aussie I was paying about $30 for the standard 30 day L tourist visa.

The above website was last updated in 2009. From memory I think Americans now pay $160? Anyway best to go in person early morning fill out the form, have passport photos and also copy the front page of your passport if you need to move accommodation in Nepal in the interim. Your passport will be flown to Beijing & back. Just put the name of the hostel or hotel you will be staying at for the first night on the application form. They really don't care where you're going after that. List a few cities you'd like to visit. If you're going to Tibet then they will scrutinize your application more carefully.

Any visa application that mentions going via Tibet from Ktm will be scrapped , only group permits , even long before 2008.

According to the Nepalese homepage you need a "invitation letter" or a visa recommendation. Do you know if that is still a requirement and in that case how to get it?

thx
