Puerto Vallarta to Mexico City

I have +/- 3 weeks in Mexico this trip. I will fly into Puerto Vallarta and spend about a week there and in some smaller places in the north.

BAJADUDE - I can't send you a pm -- do you feel like posting the town and the name of the place you suggested to me last year?

Then a few days in Guadalajara. I'd like to go direct to Patzcuaro from there, but it looks like I have to go to Morelia first. Is that correct? That's all I can figure out from the bus schedules anyway....

Then I want to go see the Monarch butterflies. Is mid-to-late February a good time for that? Or should I leave it for next year when I hope to be in Mexico City in January. Is it easy enough to go on your own or is a tour (from Morelia?) a better choice? Any recommendations if there are companies in Morelia that do this. I think I have something on this in one of my many hidden pm's as well.

Hotel recommendations in ALL these towns/places/area great appreciated.

Thanks, guys.

I believe that AutoVías (La Linea) has one departure a day from Guadalajara to Pátzcuaro. I just looked that up at http://AutoVias.com.mx. (A new, and, IMO, not an improved Web site. )It leaves Guad at 8:45 a.m. and arrives Pátz at 12:45 p.m. Cost is $295 pesos. Part of the route will not be on autopistas. It probably leaves the autopista to head to Pátzcuaro by way of Zacapu and Quiroga. (Somewhat winding highway. I'm not certain about that.

INAPAM discount 50%. for those fortunate to have the credencial.

Why not go MC, Morelia, Patzcuaro, Zihuatanejo, PV & finish in Guadalajara?

Yes, that routing would make sense, but I want to do this routing because it is the only way I can fly direct to Puerto Vallarta (and on the return, one change of plane in Vancouver)t to and from Canada without a stop in the US. Nothing against the US and USians, but I prefer to avoid an additional customs and immigration ordeal, if possible. But I could do

Isn't Zihuatanejo miles and miles "out of my way"? Or is it nice enough that it deserves a visit? I thought I would take care of beach towns up and down a smidge from PV? BTW, I'm not a beach person - like to sit and stroll and look, but I don't much go into the water past my knees. No surfing for this old gal either! Although a bit of snorkelling could tempt me.

Lo Siento I miss read your OP. Thought you were starting in MC, So PV, Gudalajara, Patzcuaro & Morelia would be the best route.
Do not short change Morelia a truly lovely city, very sophisticated with great architecture.
It also is the jumping off point for the Butterflies.

Bajadude -- this places was in Los Ayala (i remembered that because a friend commented that it is her daughter's name!)

Stewbear - wasn't omitting Morelia. Just didn't emphasize it. :-)

Yes, that sounds familiar. Thanks. Funny (?) thing. I went to Trip Advisor to look up Los Ayala and what pops up but a security warning from the US government to not travel to that area unless absolutely necessary. Sigh....
