any advice on how to travel from Santiago to Lima?

Hi!

Me and my boyfriend are going to South America on a big trip. Until now we didn't encounter any problems travelling through Argentina, but my question is what is the best way to travel cheap from Santiago to Lima. I wouldn't mind stop somewhere in between. Flight is not an option as I can see it's expensive, but if someone know anything please share. Thank you very much!

well the most direct overland route is highway 5 to the peru border where it becomes highway 1....nice buses all the way....look at a map and determine how many hours a day you want to travel and pick out cities to stop.

Buses will not be cheap either, count all accommodation and food on the way and probably you'll spend about same amount of money. But travelling that way will allow you to see some things so it's still better idea if you have time.
Most direct and also the most boring route is just follow the coast, but it's nothing spectacular.
The best way is to travel via Bolivia, entering from San Pedro to Uyuni then to La Paz and on to Puno. From there there is either a long bus ride, or not that expensive domestic flight (around $80)
If you want to travel not just get from point A to B I would recommend this way

Thank you guys for the tips. We would actually stick to the route and hit Lima in 2 days max. Any bus comapnies that are reliable? Also in what cities shall we stop? thank you

There is little to see in Chile, I would just go straight to Arica (will be more than $100 pp, check out domestic flights they don't have to be much more expensive). In Peru you can decide to stop in Nazca and/or Ica for Huacachina oasis. Pretty decent place for a night.

Regarding other questions I have no current recommendations for bus companies, sorry. Just stick to "cama" and don't pay peanuts and you'll be fine.
Also 2 days max is really tight and I'm not sure if you have time to stop anywhere besides Arica.
Stretch it to 3-4 days if you can.

(I just love no way to edit my posts: thank you TT team for making forum experience miserable)
I don't know what I was thinking: 2 days max you actually don't have time to stop for even one minute anywhere, it's around 4000 km!!! Check the map and be more realistic

Combining two days max with the cheapest fare probably means breaking in Arica.

Take a collectivo across the border to Tacna.

Still this will probably be 2.5 days.

With no stops, just keep moving.

About 28 hours Stgo to Arica, 2.5 hours for border and bus change IF you get good connections and another 20 on to Lima.

Ormeno does it all the way.

I looked for flight to northern Chile and there are some available to Iquique and Antofagosta and are at a decent price. Is it doable if we catcha morning flight and then a bus to Cuzco?

It's doable but rushed, it's better to stop in Arequipa for day or two, it's really nice city.

It's 700km from Tacna, it will take full day to get there.

Is what doable?

Can you get from Santiago to Lima via Cuzco in two days if you start by flying to Antofogasta or Iquique?

Absolutely not.

Cuzco is a big detour with very complicated mountain roads. No comparison to staying on the direct Panamericana road.

And going to Cuzco without staying min 3 or 4 days to explore makes no sense.

It is doable taking into account that you'll fly to Cuzco to LIma. Does it make any sense? Absolutely not.
