Underage surcharge if only one driver is -25?

Hi,

We would like to rent a car for 3 weeks in the USA (LA -> san fransisco). I am 25 and my boyfriend is 24. I understand most companies charge an underage fee for drivers of minus 25. If my boyfriend is additional driver, will we have to pay the full extra fee?

Thanks a lot!

Sanne

Ask the rental company. They all have their own rules.

It may vary with location and company. I was able to find that Dollar, Thrifty and Enterprise will charge the fee for any underage person who is authorized to drive the car.

Hertz right now is waiving the underage fee

There is generally an extra fee for the additional drivers as well, unless married.

to #3 if IDs have same residence using the term "domestic partner" will cover the situation in some cases, that includes same-gender partners

Hi Pochteca,
You are correct, at least in theory. However, we rented in Santa Ana two weeks ago from a national firm and were told that the extra fee would apply because my spouse and I have different last names. My understanding of California rules on additional driver fees doesn't actually allow that, but we were too tired to fight it. It's the first time we've encountered any such "rule" in 30 years, but different agencies may be imposing these fees differently. Just though the OP should have a "head's up" on the possibility of this additional one.

It looks like we'll have to pay the underage fee with all companies. Hertz is indeed waiving the fee, but only until the end of May and we are renting a car in June.

A belgian travel agent offered us a fee quote of € 900 (= 1200 USD) for a Toyota Corolla for 16 days, including the underage fee (= + €200), additional driver (which is free of charge) and all basic insurances.

Seems ok... Just a little stupid to pay an additional € 200 just because my boyfriend is born 5 months too late :).
